work in my craft room. It actually doubles as my office/craft room. There are so many things to play with- sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, claying, scrapping, painting – oh, my, the list is endless. I even have a torch! So, I can’t just call it a sewing room or a studio. That would be misleading.
But today, I’m working with clay (honestly the color differs within each brand and some brands are better than others at certain things, it’s complicated – more on that later), whether making beads (pic on your left) or working with mixed media (art journal on your right). There are many ways to express your creativity. Clay is so organic, so malleable. Working with it, shaping it, and blending it can melt stress away. I become so focused on the way the colors and consistencies change as I work, adding a variety of inclusions, the clay becomes all I think about. If you can imagine it, you can create it.
Art journals can be created from old books, composition books, sketch books, or you can make your own cover and wing it! It’s like magic. Everything from broken jewelry, bits of paper and sand, dried flowers, and old watch parts can be incorporated into you work. But be cautious. Mixed media can be habit-forming. The whimsy and fantasy it evokes lends to an atmosphere of ‘other worldliness’, a land where fairies grace the lacy canopy of the forest, drinking dew drops from rose petals, while the sun shines a bit brighter, the air smells a bit fresher and, perhaps, the world is not such a dangerous place.
